Artifact: 2008 ACTIVATE! National Youth Leadership Conference on Physical Activity, Recreation and Sport View certificate here

Description:

From May 7-11, 2008 I attended theĀ  ACTIVATE! 2008 National Youth Leadership Conference at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON. It was a conference on finding ways to get youth more involved in Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity within your community. Forty youth were selected from across Canada to attend this conference, share their thoughts and ideas, develop relationships, skills, plans and then head back to their communities to ACTIVATE the youth.

Impact:

This was a very powerful experience. I was able to meet some amazing people from across the country and hear what they have done, what their communities are like, and what they plan to do. In my dorm room alone there was a person from Norman Wells (NWT), Iqaluit (Nunavut), St. John’s (Newfoundland) and myself from the prairies. I was able to gain insight into what it is like to live in these places and what type of sports and physical activities are most popular. These are just three of the many great people I met during this conference. During a sharing circle on the last day of the conference I was able to connect with all of the amazing people there. It was a great experience and I was able to make so many great contacts in the area of physical education, sport and recreation. It really helped to build my personal learning network. See my blog post which was written when i returned home from Ottawa.

Intention/Challenges:

How can I take what I learned at this conference and use it to improve myself as a physical education teacher? How will I take what was learned and ACTIVATE! my community? How will I maintain the connections that I made in Ottawa?

Recommendations:

In Ottawa we had an excellent session on the Paralympics which included sledge hockey, wheelchair basketball and goalball. I was able to find out how exactly I could go about getting the equipment needed to teacher students how to play these sports so now when I have the opportunity I can try it out. As for ACTIVATING! my community, I am working as part of the In Motion Teen and Young Adult Committee this year to promote physical activity to youth. We are planning a few events for the upcoming semester. Last year had a partnership with Cochrane High School in Regina and then put on an International Youth Week Event at the University of Regina. It was an amazing event, to learn more about it go to the Collaboration page.
