Growth & Development

Artifact: EPE 100 Video (This artifact is submitted to professor in person and not yet uploaded to internet)

Description:

During my first year in the Faculty of Education, as part of my EPE 100 course, we videotaped ourselves micro-teaching a 30 minute lesson to our peers. This would later prove to be a very valuable tool. Coming from a sporting background I have always known video to be a useful tool in dissecting a game to see what worked and what went wrong. Although before this I had never thought about using it to improve teaching. Being able to see our lesson in video we were able to make recommendations to improve our teaching strategies, active learning time and professional development. My partner and I were fairly inexperienced when we taught our lesson and being able to look at our lesson from a different perspective allowed for a substantial amount of realization and growth.

Impact:

This was the first time that I had really integrated technology into physical education and it proved to be very beneficial. I learned a great amount about teaching after watching myself on the video. It is funny how different things sometimes seem when you are able to look back and reflect on them. It was a great experience and I began to appreciate the importance of having students active and engaged as opposed to always lecturing and taking half the class to explain when often learning by doing can work too. This was my first real opportunity for reflection in education and I was able to see how powerful it can be.

Intention/Challenges:

Realizing that using video was a very effective way for me to reflect and think of ways to improve my own practices, I must ask how else I can use this in terms of teaching and learning? Are there ways that I can continue to use this in my own professional development? Can this be used by students for projects, demonstrations, or routines?

Recommendations:

As a teacher I can emulate this activity by again videotaping one of my lessons every now and then to continue improving and discovering new things that I can work on. It is nice to have a different perspective and in a way you are able to view your lesson from the eyes of a learner, something that teachers are rarely able to experience. As for my students, video can be used so that they can critique and review movements or performances from class. They can use video to post their work on the internet and possibly share with other physical education classes from around the globe
