Collaboration
Artifact: EHE 258 Volunteer Project (In Motion Committee International Youth Week Event and Cochrane High School Partnership). This will be submitted to professor in person and later uploaded to blog.
Description:
For my volunteer project as part of my EHE 258 class I chose to join the University of Regina In Motion Committee. We teamed up with Cochrane High School and ran various afternoon activities at the University of Regina. One of the afternoons we took a group of students to the Fitness & Lifestyle Centre and taught them various exercises and techniques. On another afternoon we arranged for some of my teammates on the men’s basketball team and some girls from the women’s basketball team to do a basketball session with students. Aside from the Cochrane events we also organized a large International Youth Week Event at the University on May 6th, 2008. We wanted to target youth at-risk between the ages of 12-16. The event was entitled “Active Bodies…Active Minds” and our keynote speaker was Amy Alsop, a two-time paralympic gold-medalist. We had sessions on anti-gang education, kinball, personal fitness (trainers from Level 10 Fitness), and a free pizza supper to top it off. It was a great success and we had approximately 60 youth attend.
Impact
I really enjoyed being a part of In Motion team. I got to work with a bunch of great university students, make contacts at Cochrane High School and various community centres and organizations through the city as part of the International Youth Week Event. It was so much fun hanging out with a bunch of youth in a physically active setting. I gained experience teaching students about personal fitness and it’s importance.
Intention/Challenges:
How can I take this to the next level and increase my role with the In Motion Committee? How can I create something sustainable that will last for years to come and impact many students?
Recommendations:
This year I have increased my role with In Motion and I am co-chairing the committee. We are going to be planning our objectives and goals over the Christmas break and hope to implement our initiatives during the winter semester. We are looking to create something sustainable and have not yet decided exactly what will be doing.
